Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an extension to a pedestrianised area identified that it lay towards the western end of the area believed to have been occupied by the medieval settlement of Bilston. Cartographic evidence indicated that this area of the High Street had been developed by the end of the 18th century. The town had been heavily re-developed by the time of the first edition Ordnance Survey map in 1887, partly as a result of increasing industrialisation, and partly as a result of extensive slum clearances. Despite this later development, the tenement plot pattern, which probably dated from the medieval period, had largely survived along High Street and Church Street. A photographic survey of three standing buildings at the site was undertaken, ahead of their proposed demolition. The building at no. 25/27 was found to have been largely modern, but no. 21 was found to have pre-dated 1875, and no. 23 also potentially contained pre-1875 elements. It was noted that medieval structures could be expected to have stood along the street frontage, although later cellars were likely to have scoured out remains at the immediate frontage. It was not known whether cellars existed beneath nos. 25/27. Land to the rear of the frontages was considered to have potential for the survival of medieval backplot remains such as rubbish pits, small-scale industrial workings, outbuildings and property boundaries, although possible mining disturbance could have occurred. Further recording of nos. 21 and 23 was recommended, and it was noted that the archaeological implications of below-ground works would need to be addressed separately. [AIP]
