Abstract:
A series of trial pits were excavated in order to assess the structural integrity of standing buildings, prior to the submission of a planning application to extend a theatre. Three pits were excavated under archaeological supervision. The site lay within an area formerly occupied by the medieval and post-medieval Deanery of Wolverhampton and its associated grounds and gardens. A map dating from 1750 depicted the Deanery Hall within the area equivalent to the modern Arena Theatre. The Hall and associated outbuildings had been demolished in 1926 and in 1951 respectively. A watching brief previously carried out over part of the Deanery site had recorded post-medieval foundations, although monitoring at a second site in the vicinity had failed to identify any significant archaeological deposits. During the monitoring of test pits, no archaeological deposits were observed, due to disturbance caused by previous groundworks. [AIP]
