Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks for a small-scale development at a site which lay within the village of Cookley. No archaeological work had previously been undertaken in the vicinity of the site, but its position near the centre of the village had given rise to expectations that some evidence for early settlement could be encountered. No evidence of activity pre-dating the post-medieval period was observed, much of the site having previously been disturbed by cellar construction, apparently dating to the 19th century. It was apparent that the site had been terraced subsequent to this date and that any early remains would therefore have been destroyed. [Au(adp)]
