Abstract:
Topsoil and modern backfill were removed from a World War II defensive site, so that a photographic and drawn survey of each element could be undertaken prior to the construction of an access road to a new housing development. The site comprised three discernible structures which had been identified as pillboxes, and a gun mount. Earlier investigation had indicated that a barrack block had also been associated with the site. The original barracks building had been incorporated into a nearby bungalow. Following the exposure of the structures, two were identified as a pillbox and a gun store. The third structure was unllikely to have been a pillbox. Two plausible interpretations of its function were that it had been an ammunition bunker/store, or an air-raid shelter for the gun crew. It was noted that the whole of the site had been set on a concrete platform, and that a slight difference in level existed at the southern end. A brick wall which ran down the western side of the platform may have supported some kind of lean-to, although its purpose may simply have been to 'finish' the site. It was concluded that the gun emplacement was likely to have been established fairly early on in the Second World War, in the middle of 1940, and that it had probably not survived as a controlled site much after 1945.
