Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks associated with an extension to provide toilet facilities at the south side of St Peter's Church, within the village of Barford. The name of the village suggested that it had originated on the site of an early, possibly Saxon, crossing of the River Avon. The church had first been referred to in 1205, although a Domesday reference to a priest in Barford suggested that it may have been of earlier origin. All that remained of the medieval church was the 14th century tower, the rest of the structure having been rebuilt when it had become unsafe in 1844. Prior to the excavation of foundation trenches for the extension, two grave markers were removed. No evidence of a grave cut was seen beneath the first, a red sandstone vault lid, and no skeletal remains were recovered. The second, a green sandstone headstone, commemorated an individual interred in 1775. Excavation in the area of the headstone revealed a coffin, and remains of the individual; these were left in situ. Numerous further burials, some of which were probably of 18th and 19th century date, were observed during the watching brief. A small sherd of medieval pottery was associated with one of the grave cuts, but no medieval or earlier structures were identified. [AIP]
