Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a housing development. Trenches excavated across the eastern part of the site in 1996 had demonstrated excellent survival of archaeological features representing 14th century activity, and had indicated that the area appeared to have reverted to agricultural use until the later 16th century, when the sandstone foundations of a substantial buildig indicated renewed expansion of the town. A rapid internal and external examination was made of standing buildings at the site. The main building, Structure A, comprised the rump of an early 19th century two-storey industrial structure, whilst Structure B consisted of a rear range added onto Structure A. A third structure represented modern infill. During the evaluation, medieval features comprising ditches and depressions were revealed, whilst sandstone foundations were tentatively dated to the 17th century. Post-holes and stake-holes of a possible 17th century date and a pit containing iron slag, indicating industrial activity in the area, were also recorded. It was noted that more precise dating of the structures and associated layers could be achieved by further excavation in more controlled circumstances. [AIP]
