Abstract:
Four trenches were excavated in advance of proposed works to a church. The west end of the nave was to be reorganised in order to provide disabled toilet facilities and a meeting room. Three of the trenches were excavated in the interior of the church, whilst the fourth constituted a external continuation of Trench 3. The internal trenches revealed evidence of foundations which were probably of early medieval date. Human skeletal remains were recovered and returned to the church for reburial, and some undisturbed graves were identified but were not excavated. A pit was found which contained a significant quantity of human bone, none of which was articulated. This had probably been excavated as a place to deposit remains disturbed during restoration of the church in c. 1870. The external trench revealed no archaeologically significant features or deposits. It was noted that disturbed bones were more frequent within the end of the trench which was closest to the church. A number of residual finds were recovered from the internal trenches, including a fragment of clay pipe bowl, fragments of floor and roof tile, iron coffin handles and fragments of window glass. These were generally found within layers associated with the Victorian restoration of the church. [AIP]
