Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed route of a pipeline identified that it threatened a number of archaeological sites with total or partial destruction. The majority of these sites could be grouped into a series of ten distinct archaeologically sensitive zones. Zone 1 comprised fields adjacent to Berry Mound Camp, an Iron Age hillfort. A find of Roman coins had been made in the vicinity. Zone 2 consisted of fields associated with the recovery of Romano-British artefacts, and lay close to a moated enclosure. A former medieval settlement, a moated site, fields of ridge and furrow and other earthwork features lay within Zone 3.This area had been badly affected by the construction of a motorway and other modern development, but it was anticipated that medieval features could have survived. In Zone 4, the pipeline passed close to the sites of a former medieval moat, a Grade I Listed Building, a mill and a bridge. Zone 5 comprised fields adjacent to a medieval moated site, which contained a number of areas of surviving ridge and furrow, a possible kiln site, a clay pit, a pond and other features, making up a potentially important surviving medieval landscape. Zone 6 also comprised fields adjacent to a moated site, whilst Zone 7 passed through the vicinity of a medieval settlement. A group of cropmarked features within Zone 8 included a possible Iron Age enclosure and at least three ring ditches, possibly marking the sites of ploughed out Bronze Age barrows. Zone 9 comprised fields adjacent to Berry Fields Farm, which was thought to have potential for medieval features, whilst Zone 10 lay within fields adjacent to the original medieval settlement of Meriden. A hill associated with the settlement may have been a focus of prehistoric activity. It was recommended that all of the sites which would potentially be affected by the pipeline should be inspected prior to the commencement of groundworks, that a watching brief should be carried out during topsoil stripping within each of the defined zones, and that fieldwalking should be undertaken in all other stripped areas.
