Abstract: |
Archaeological trial trenches excavated in advance of the construction of 14 new houses on the site of the former Atherstone police station and magistrates court found no significant archaeological deposits despite the proximity of the medieval town and friary. A single pit was uncovered in a trench on the south side of the area and was dated to the 18th century. A single sherd of residual medieval pottery was also found within the fill of this pit. No other significant archaeological features were exposed and the site was characterised by the sever truncation caused by the construction and demolition of the police station and associated buildings. |
