Abstract:
An archaeological excavation was undertaken by CFA in two phases between December 2014 and March 2015 (Phase 1) and in May 2016 (Phase 2). The work uncovered a number of features including a parallel trackway and ditch, and a substantial Romano-British enclosure. The trackway had been benched into the hillside and the parallel ditch had been excavated to protect it from water runoff. The Romano-British enclosure appears fairly similar to other known examples from within the region, with it being sub-square in plan and enclosing an area of c.3250m² and, although its purpose remains unclear, the apparently random internal linear features may represent the remains of a Roman period field system such as that excavated at Burgh-by-Sands and those associated with a similar ditched enclosure at Burgh Road, Carlisle. Roman period pottery was recovered from both the enclosure ditch and from the trackway. Also uncovered was evidence of prehistoric settlement, which had been sealed by the colluvial deposits into which the Roman-period features had been excavated. These features consisted of a series of pits, many of which contained lithics and carbonised hazelnut shall. Initial analysis of this material suggests that it may be early Mesolithic in date.
