Abstract: |
A watching brief and the metal detecting of spoil was carried out during pylon foundation repair works under Scheduled Monument Consent at Whitemoss Roman Fort. The excavated areas at all four corners of the pylon were monitored. Topsoil at each of the four corners of the pylon was removed by a digger and by hand. Concrete foundation was broken out by pneumatic drill. Given the disturbed nature of the ground around the pylon legs no archaeological deposits, features or artefacts were found during the excavation of the slots. Stratigraphy was turf topsoil and redeposited material backfilling each of the four legs of pylon. Deposit consisted of very stony mid brown silt, shattered rock and broken glass bottles. |
