Abstract:
On the 3rd of May 2016 Compass Archaeology conducted an archaeological evaluation at the former King's Head Public House, No.4 Fulham High Street, Fulham, SW6 3LQ. This was followed by a watching brief in which visits were made to the site on the 27th and 28th of June and on the 4th July 2016 for the construction of a new lightwell during redevelopment works. The site is located on the eastern edge of the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Fulham Palace Moated Site. The full dimensions of the works were 15.30m NW-SE and 3.25m NE-SW at their greatest extent, reaching 1.46m at their greatest depth. The site has been subject to significant levels of post-medieval dumping related to consolidation of the ground after infilling of the moat in the early-20th century. 19th century glassware and pottery was found in the made ground deposit (13) and residual 17th-18th century pottery from (7), both in the evaluation trench. During the watching brief, context (15) produced English Stoneware (1700-1900) as well as a 'torpedo' style 'Hooper Struver and Co.' glass (1891-1900), a later 'Hooper Struve and Co. Ltd' seltzer bottle fragment (post-1963), two partial Victorian glass sugar crushers and clay pipe dating approximately from the late 18th-early 19th century. This context clearly contained a lot of residual material and indicates the extent to which the site has been disturbed in the post-medieval period. Natural deposits were not reached during excavations
