Abstract:
Two archaeological excavations took place during 2008 as part of the Stirling Castle Palace Project (SCPP) prior to the commencement of restoration works. SCPP-2008-04 and SCPP-2008-12: Excavation between the Governor's Kitchen and the King's Old Buildings. The area in question to the NW of the main Palace block involved three discrete spaces, numbered during the main investigation into the Palace as P:19; P:20 and S:07 from W to E. SCPP-2008-10, Excavation above the vault of the Princes Tower. Three small trenches were excavated in the first floor (above vault level) Prince's Tower, trench 1 was in the NE corner of the room, trench 2 the NW corner and trench 3 along the S wall of the room. The current floor is dated no more precisely than 19th-20th century, and the dusty loose deposits below it yielded a single coin of possible 17th-century French origin. Structures were identified that possibly pre-date the vault of the Princes Tower.
