Abstract:
Various phases of archaeological work were carried out between January 2014 and October 2015. Although prehistoric artefactual material and possible prehistoric soil horizons were recorded, the earliest, clearly in situ archaeological deposits dated to the early Roman period (1st - 2nd century AD) and were associated with domestic activity, structural development and waste deposition to the west of a major Roman road, the western ditch of which was also extensively exposed. A later Roman phase (3rd to 4th century AD) saw further activity including an area of the site used for inhumation burials as part of the far more extensive North Cemetery, which lay just outside the Roman city of Londinium. There was no significant activity on the site during the immediate post-Roman period or during the early medieval period, but it was re-occupied at about the time of the Norman Conquest, with a number of cess and rubbish pits, along with other features suggesting domestic activity nearby at this time. The site continued to be exploited throughout the medieval period and into the early post-medieval period, when there was significant structural development, at least in the eastern half of the site. Further structural development continued throughout the post-medieval period with the buildings at the east of the site at least, undergoing a number of phases of redevelopment. The site was fully developed by the second half of the 19th century with the eastern buildings still standing when the archaeological investigations commenced, dating to this and/or earlier periods. Redevelopment of the western half of the site continued until a much later date, buildings still standing here during the earlier phases of archaeological investigations, dating to the later 20th century.
