Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation and geotechnical watching brief consisting of 6 trenches, 3 test pits, 11 window samples and two bore holes. Defunct Thames Street and a parish church and its graveyard. The archaeological evaluation and watching brief indicated that the establishment, development and re-development of the Brewery complex during the 19th and 20th centuries led to substantial horizontal truncation of potential archaeological horizons. However traces of 19th century buildings that pre-dated the Brewery were encountered in the eastern part of the site, a large carved stone moulding that was considered to relate either to the mansion or the palace that originally stood on the site was recovered from a modern context, a potential feature was identified cutting natural deposits and substantial subsoil deposits sealing the natural sand and gravel were found in the majority of trenches.
