Abstract:
Three 2m by 2m test pits were excavated within the car park area to the south of the Bechtel House building. The evaluation demonstrated that the underlying superficial geology consisted of Kempton Park gravels, found at a maximum height of 3.76m OD. This layer was overlain by a layer of brickearth found at between 3.66m and 4.21m OD. To the west a 1.05m thick layer of made ground was excavated which was truncated by the construction of a north-south masonry wall on a concrete foundation of a post-medieval to modern date. To the east of the site a 0.60m thick layer of made ground was discovered which was also truncated by the construction of a masonry wall on a concrete foundation running east-west. This wall is also of a post-medieval to modern date. Overlying the entire area was a bedding layer of sand. This was capped by concrete with a layer of tarmac forming the car park surface at a height of between 5.28m and 5.40m OD.
