Abstract:		 Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) at the request of Steve Rathborn (the Client) during groundworks associated with the dismantling of an old garage and construction of a new garage at Stars Barn Cottage, Winkleigh, Torridge, Devon. The monitoring was carried out by P. Webb on 19th October 2016. This work was undertaken in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (Boyd 2014) drawn up in accordance with a brief issued by Ann Dick and in consultation with Stephen Reed of the Devon County Historic Environment Team (DCHET). The site lies in an area of high archaeological potential, immediately adjacent to the western edge of the Scheduled area of the 12th century motte-and-bailey castle known as Castle Court, and on the fringes of the historic settlement of Winkleigh with numerous Listed 17th to 19th century cottages and 14th century church. Evidence of prehistoric activity is also recorded with a Bronze Age barrow to the north of the site.
