Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during internal alteration works which involved the removal of pews and the relocation of the font. Following the removal of three pews, platform and beams in the south-western corner of the south aisle of the church, subsequent hand ground reduction here identified a rubble deposit and an underlying deposit of sandy silt, which extended to the base of the excavation. There were no finds from either of these deposits. Following this ground reduction, the foundation of part of the south wall of the earlier church was identified along with a further patch of worked stone which may have marked the location of an external buttress to this south wall. A single course of brick which extended along the south and west walls here was also identified. These had provided support for the pew platform. It was determined that the rubble deposit was associated with the extensive renovation of the church which took place in 1897 and that the sandy silt deposit represented the external ground levels which would have been outside the earlier church. The font was subsequently removed to this location. This font also dated to the 1871 renovation. |
