Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was maintained on the groundworks pertaining to the construction of a new residential dwelling. This comprised the excavation of foundations trenches and the excavation of a service trench which extended westwards from the western frontage of Ermine Street. There were no finds from this watching brief. It was clear that the ground levels on this site had been raised in height of about 1m above that of the surrounding land. This was reflected in the findings from this watching brief which identified two imported landscaping deposits, one of which was a buried soil. This second buried soil deposit was recorded throughout the monitored areas of the site. Below this was a second buried soil, which was probably an archaeological deposit which represented a former ground level, though was undated a sit did not produce any finds. |
