Abstract:
Archaeological evaluation trenching was undertaken by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) at the request of Mr Russell Dodge of Business Location Services Ltd. (the Agent) on behalf of D.C. Hughes (Falmouth) Ltd. (the Client) prior to the development of land formerly part of Falmouth Golf Course, Swanpool Road, Falmouth, Cornwall. The work was carried out in accordance with a WSI drawn up in consultation with Dan Ratcliffe (HEPAO as was), Cornwall Council. This is the final phase of work associated with the redevelopment of land associated with the golf course (see SWARCH Report No. 131007) Planning Application Number C1/EA02/0075/09/M. The site lies on the south edge of Falmouth at Falmouth Golf Club, along Swanpool Road, at a height of c.45m AOD and c.620m from the coast. Previous archaeological assessments of the site include one in 2008 by Cornwall County Councils Historic Environment Service (HEP2008:R123) and monitoring and recording conducted by SWARCH in 2013 (SWARCH Report No.: 131007). These earlier reports inform us that the surrounding area includes medieval farmsteads and field systems and the golf course includes World War II defences including the footings of a barrage balloon. A small amount of Bronze Age pottery was recovered from the topsoil elsewhere on the Golf Course. The soils of this area are the well drained fine loamy soils of the Denbigh 2 Association (SSEW 1983), overlying the sandstone and argillaceous rocks of the Portscatho Formation (BGS 2017). The site lies in an area of medieval farmsteads to the north of Pennance; a Cornish place-name meaning 'head of the valley'. See afore mentioned previous reports for further historical/archaeological background. No significant archaeological features were identified on the site.
