Abstract: |
An archaeological field evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken on land northeast of Whitwell, Hodthorpe, Derbyshire, by University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) in advance of the proposed construction of residential dwellings with associated landscaping and infrastructure. A geophysical survey identified a number of possible archaeological anomalies comprising linear ditches and pits, suggestive of field systems (and similar to the 'brickwork plan' field systems known in this area, with long, parallel ditches crossed by minor ditches at right angles forming a gridded pattern), with added potential for small settlement areas. Twenty-seven trial trenches were excavated targeting many of the features identified as anomalies on the geophysical survey. The trial trenching revealed that many of the features were geological in origin and identified on a light scatter of potential ditches on east side of the development. No dating evidence was recovered but they are thought to be perhaps pre-modern in origin. |
