Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land north-east of Upton Marina, Upton on Severn, Worcestershire (NGR SO 8588 4093). It was undertaken on behalf of Tingdene Marinas Limited, in advance of a proposed residential development for which an outline planning application has been submitted. Fifteen trenches, amounting to 1088m² in area, were excavated across the proposed site. One ditch, dating to the early to middle Roman period (1st-2nd centuries) was revealed. The sherd size and quantity of the pottery recovered from the ditch indicates that there was Roman activity in the area, although no other archaeological features or deposits were identified on the site. Two sherds of later medieval pottery were also recovered from unstratified deposits, although these are probably indicative of medieval manuring practice, rather than settlement activity. |
