Abstract: |
An historic park assessment was undertaken at Farncombe Estate, Broadway, Worcestershire (NGR SP 114 381). It was undertaken on behalf of Sorven Properties Limited, who intend to erect an office building on the estate, for which a planning application has been submitted. The project aimed to explain the historical context of the site and the provenance of the surviving features and landscape. The earliest identifiable surviving structures appear to be the late 18th century house which survives as the central core of Farncombe House today. Little is known about the surrounding park and garden of this time, but it is likely to have been designed in an open parkland style, which mimics the natural surrounding landscape and takes advantage of the views over the Worcestershire countryside to the west. There are some indications of this style of garden on an estate plan of 1872, but at this time there were no buildings or formal planting on the planning application site. During the 19th century, Farncombe House was extended and new buildings added. Some of the surviving trees are likely to date to this period and by this time a fish pond was created. The planning application site lies at the northern tip of an area, which at this time, appears to have been used as the estate farm, and where two small buildings (probably outbuildings) existed. It was only during the early 20th century that major changes were made to the gardens. Terracing, and formal gardens with yew hedges were constructed in the gardens in front of Farncombe House by convalescing soldiers during World War I. Little of the 18th century landscape is likely to have survived the remodelling of the gardens in this area. Further additions were made to the standing buildings, but by the mid 1960s the small buildings on the planning development site, which were apparently used as pigsties, had been demolished. |
