Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was carried out by GUARD Archaeology Limited on an area proposed for the development of a new play area at Calderglen Country Park, East Kilbride. The proposed trial trench evaluation was to sample 8% (734 m²) of the total area proposed for development (1.45 ha) which reduced to 0.918 hectares once excluded areas including service buffer zones, existing pathways, tree avenues and the present play area were all taken into account (figure 1). A total of 12 main trenches which varied in length between 17 m and 50 m and two additional trenches measuring 3 m in length were excavated. During the evaluation a linear sandstone pathway was discovered, the extent of the path was exposed within the development area; the total area actually sampled during the evaluation was 696 m² (7.6% sample). The cartographic sources suggest that the path probably dates to the mid-late nineteenth century AD and was part of wider path network or land division in the formal designed landscape during this period.
