Considers the evolution at Chester in comparison with ten fortresses in Britain and on the Continent (six of Caerleon type, four with short praetentura). Chester and Novaesium have features of both types. More excavation should reveal the use of the 'extra' space.

Surviving evidence suggests a course from Boughton springs (1.5km from fortress) from at least AD 79, using a battery of ceramic pipelines, presumably a settling tank (?raised on wall), and at least one main plus service pipes. Several delivery points in the fortress are known, the aqueduct being integral to its plan.

At 38-42 Watergate Street is a good survival of an early 14th century substantial merchant's house with original fabric on all three storeys. The undercroft retains massive timber trusses; great hall and screens passage, shops; later alterations eg fireplaces. Dendrodates support a 14th century origin. The house is Panton's 'Double range' type. Do others survive behind the Row frontage?
