Comparisons are made between Chester, Novae (Bulgaria), Novaesium (Neuss), and Aquincum (Budapest). The first three exemplify a third fortress type to add to the Caerleon and Inchtuthil/Lambaesis types.

Four fragments of circle-headed standing crosses were found in 1874 built into the church foundations, with another in the belfry. They are classed on the Cramp typology and attempts made to identify their figural decoration; a strong Irish Viking element is evident.

First report on the new study of the unique first-floor continuous galleries, which appear to originate in late 13th/early 14th century. They have stone undercrofts with timber-framing over. They follow the line of Roman ruins and seem to have arisen through an economic boom seen in Chester during Edward I's N Welsh castle-building campaigns. Brief gazetteer of individual houses.
