I: The Tatton Park project, part 1: prehistoric to sub-Roman settlement and land use
Peter Carrington
Nicholas J Higham
T Cane
C Appleby
1 - 61
Reports on archaeological investigations undertaken within the eighteenth-century park, which encloses a deserted medieval village. The present article concentrates on the discoveries relating to earlier periods of occupation, made during excavations in 1982 at a site on the bank of Tatton Mere artificial lake. Activity relating to Mesolithic, Neolithic, Roman and sub-Roman periods was identified from structural remains, artefacts, and the results of pollen analysis.
II: Viking-period Chester: an alternative perspective
Tony Austin
63 - 87
Uses Chester as a test-case to develop an historically specific and testable model to explain the blossoming of trade and urban activity in northern and western Europe in the Viking age. The model is proposed as an alternative to the theory that this change was led by the Vikings and it is argued rather that the newcomers provided an incidental mechanism for the breakdown of existing social structures and the rise of a new elite.
III: Archbishop Plegmund and the court of King Alfred 890–923
S Mathews
89 - 113
Historical account of the life role of the Mercian cleric.
IV: A medieval building contract from Storeton, Wirral
Malcolm J B Hislop
115 - 121
Discusses an indenture document that is thought to relate to the now ruinous medieval hall house at Storeton Hall Farm, Storeton in Wirral.
