I: Neolithic stone axeheads from Cheshire

The paper discusses the Neolithic stone axehead finds from the county and considers the materials from which they were produced. It is suggested that locally occurring materials, in the form of stone derived from glacial deposits, were extensively utilised although a small proportion of axeheads of more `exotic' material is also present. The traditional explanation of distribution of stone axeheads via a network of `axe traders' is critiqued and alternative explanations suggested. Includes

Construction of an electricity substation at Snow Hill, Nantwich, provided conclusive evidence of Roman occupation within the part of the town that lies to the east of the River Weaver. Artefacts recovered during building work and the dating of structural timbers indicate that the area was occupied in the second century AD. The analysis of the timbers also suggests that occupation may have begun in the previous century. Includes separately authored contributions on
