Abstract: |
Geophysical survey and trial trenching were carried out to further investigate Iron Age deposits and a Roman building first located and recorded on Round Hill in 1947. An Iron Age hill fort is situated on nearby Castle Hill. It was not possible to investigate the top of Round Hill because of dense woodland, but post-holes and pits of Early Iron Age date were recorded on the lower slopes. Small, square enclosures also probably of Early Iron Age date, were investigated at the foot of Castle Hill. The spread of Roman demolition material identified in 1947 was relocated and found to represent the remains of a farmstead within a ditched enclosure. Although in use throughout the Roman period, the farmstead was redeveloped in the mid 3rd to 4th centuries AD, when a high status residence with a tessellated floor was constructed. |
