Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology carried out building recording at the Gara Rock Hotel prior to its demolition and the erection of new apartments. The recording, carried out after much of the interior cladding had been stripped, consisted of a measured survey to produce a ground floor plan of the main range, and a photographic survey. The Coastguard Station at Gara Rock, including a Watch House and cottages, was built in 1846-7. The 1890 First Edition Ordnance Survey map shows a long rectangular block (cottages) with a small 'north wing' at the west end. A photograph taken before 1909 appears to show the cottages as originally built, with walls of coursed rubble stone with squared stone dressings around the window and door openings. The single pitched roof was slate covered. The Coastguard Station was bought in 1909 by Richard Jordan, who set up a family boarding house; four of the six cottages were used for accommodation, the remaining two as a dining room and lounge area. In 1919 the cottages were rendered and construction of a second storey began. Further alterations were undertaken as the hotel grew in popularity. The hotel was requisitioned by the RAF in 1940 but re-opened in 1946 as a family hotel, under the ownership of Commander Lloyd Owen. Subsequently bought by the Richards family, the hotel was again re-opened after refurbishment in 1962. The building recording showed that much of the original mid-19th century buildings were removed by later alterations. Surviving features included four stone chimney stacks; the remains of one of four stone porches with a blocked window and door opening; most of the rear (north) wall, including original window openings in the lounge or stores area. Little of the front (south) wall remained.
