Abstract: |
An evaluation was undertaken by Wessex Archaeology on the site of a proposed housing development. Six trenches were excavated, revealing the former edge of the floodplain of the River Little Ouse running noth-west to south-east across the site. The natural topography of the area was altered by infilling in the pre-Roman period by natural ?windblown sand and the construction of The Warrener public house and car park. A thin scatter of flint of probable Mesolithic date was recovered, overlying natural on the edge of the floodplain. On rising ground to the south was a network of shallow ditches interpereted as Romano-British field or plot boundaries. These are likely to have been associated with a settlement immediately to the south. No Early Saxon or Middle Saxon features or finds were present and it is assumed that the limits of these known settlements lay immediately to the south of the evaluation site, with occupation strung out along the terrace above the floodplain, covering much the same area as earlier, Romano-British occupation. |
