Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology undertook the excavation, following an earlier evaluation, to meet a condition of planning consent; two areas in the eastern part of the site were investigated. A small assemblage of finds was recovered, which range in date from Roman-British to post-medieval although the majority are from the post-medieval period. The Roman-British material was residual in later features. A curvilinear ditch of possible medieval date was recorded, but the feature was dated by a single sherd of pottery only (found during the evaluation), despite the excavation of almost half of the available length of the ditch. Fifteen sub-rectangular and 11 linear post-medieval features were investigated. The features were closely spaced but there was little intercutting. Most were sealed only by recent subsoil, suggesting that much of the original topsoil had been removed before the features were dug. The function of the features is uncertain; various industrial and agricultural/horticultural uses have been considered but, for various reasons, dismissed. Although no features of this type are known on areas of gravel terracing, there are similarities of form, layout and density to early 19th-century brickearth pits in Southampton, and it is possible that they may have been used for small-scale gravel extraction.
