Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology undertook building recording at a site occupied by Pura Foods Ltd, Leamouth. The work followed an earlier desk-based and building assessment, which had identified three buildings (Buildings 1, 2 and 5), which were to be demolished, as having moderate or moderate to high significance. Buildings 1 and 2 were recorded in 2005 and 2004 respectively. Building 5 was then in use and was not therefore recorded. A later site visit found that Building 5 had been partially demolished as a result of the removal of some large adjacent storage tanks. The building was deemed structurally unsound, making access in and around it unviable, and recording was not therefore undertaken. The recording of Buildings 1 and 2 revealed two contrasting buildings dating from the mid 19th century onwards. The south wall of Building 1 probably represents the oldest structure recorded. Map evidence suggests that it dates from the mid 19th century and formed part of a complex of buildings once used for processing oil at Jubilee Wharf. Parts of the building were badly damaged by bombing during World War II, leading to the north and west sides being later demolished, but the south wall was retained and incorporated into the present building. The south wall originally belonged to a tall single storey structure with a series of brick arched openings at ground floor level forming five bays. Evidence was also found which suggested that the building was extended to the west shortly after being built. It was extended again to the west between 1945 and 1950, when the east end was shortened and a new east wall was built. Building 2 was a well-preserved example of a post-1939 timber-framed shed with a Belfast Truss roof. This form of lightweight curved wooden roof truss was first developed in the mid 19th century to meet the demand for longer spanned roofs. |
