Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology carried out an evaluation on land to be developed as a new school. No archaeological sites or findspots of prehistoric or Roman date have been recorded in the vicinity but a desk-based assessment carried out in 2003 concluded that the site had potential for Late Saxon or medieval remains and evidence of a post-medieval house (Wembley House) and farm (Dairy Farm). Eleven evaluation trenches were excavated. A single residual sherd of Late Bronze Age pottery was recovered from a shallow modern pit. Medieval remains, consisting of a shallow gully and ditch, adjacent to each other and on the same alignment, were dug probably for drainage purposes; natural clay was encountered at a very shallow depth across the site, which was waterlogged during the evaluation. |
