Abstract:
Although Oldfurnace Cottage is known to have been constructed on the site of an Elizabethan blast furnace, test pit excavation showed that medieval bloomery smelting had also taken place there. Pottery of 13th-14th century date indicates that bloomery smelting was well-established during the medieval period, but the presence of an unstratified sherd of Late Saxon pottery suggests that iron working may have been carried out at an earlier date. No traces of any furnaces were found but these are likely to lie beneath the present cottage. Documentary records show that medieval bloomery smelting also took place at Eastwall Farm, 1.5km to the north-west of Oldfurnace Cottage. Geophysical survey there showed the well-preserved base of a bloomery furnace of probable 13th-14th century date. Strong magnetic anomalies suggets that other, similar furnaces survive at the site.
