Abstract: |
Framework Archaeology carried out an evaluation in advance of the construction of a new hotel; 13 trenches were excavated. Most of the recorded archaeological features, small rubbish pits of late post-medieval date and a large post-medieval dump, were near Edgeworth House and Wing House, while two ditches recorded may represent associated south-western and north-eastern boundaries. Tree and root hollows were recorded in the south-western part of the site, an area recorded as orchard on the Ordnance Survey 1st Edition map of 1870. Gullies towards the south-east corner of the site may have been natural water course paths related to ponds present immediately beyond the eastern edge of the site. |
