Abstract:
Planning permission was granted by Luton Borough Council for the redevelopment of land for residential purposes at Castle Street/Holly Street, Luton, Bedfordshire. Archaeological investigations consisting of watching brief and trial trenching were undertaken in late 2004-05. The watching brief allowed an appropriate trial trenching strategy to be agreed with BCC's AO by identifying areas of modern truncation and likely islands of archaeological remains. The trial trenching revealed two areas of high archaeological potential: - a large ditch of defensive proportions (the probable remains of the 13th century castle of Robert de Waudari) to the west of the site and; - an undated boundary ditch to the east. Based on these results, BCC's AO recommended further archaeological investigation. Two areas to the west of the site were subject to open area excavation and a further area to the east. These excavations were undertaken between March and early April 2005. In terms of the periods represented by the features, the most significant findings were the medieval remains of Waudari's castle ditch. Other remains included post-medieval pitting, modern disturbance associated with the 19th and 20th century growth of Luton and an undated ditch.
