Abstract: |
Atrchaeological Recording took place at Laneham yards lavenham where a number of post-medieval and post-medieval features were revealed. Two large pits were revealed that appear to be the result of quarrying. The large pits were then reused as cess pits. Further features were located, namely a spread or shallow pit containing medieval pottery dating from the 13th-14th centuries. A brick floor was revealed, although fragmentary, and was laid in Suffolk Whites. a cobbled surface was revealed which was rather poorly constructed and probable belonged to further yard activity or possible a building. It was impossible to be certain as to the dating of the floor features due to the fact that no finds were located associated with them or to say what they originally belonged to (yard or building). In Summary, quarrying at laneham Yard was dated to pre post-medieval period with reuse of the pits for cess. A spread/feature was securely dated to the Late 12th century, whilst the remainder of the features on site were all post-medieval with evidence of use from floors of previous buildings thought to date from the 18th-19th centuries. |
