Abstract: |
In the southern part of the site there was evidence for dispersed settlement and activity dating to the transitional period between the Late Iron Age and Roman periods. The evidence comprised four gullies and two pits, from which were recovered sherds of Late Iron Age transitional and early Roman pottery, including two near-complete but flattened vessels, fragments of animal burnt bone and deposits of charcoal, probably the waste from domestic hearths. Medieval/post-medieval plough furrows, the remains of the open strip field system of ploughing, were noted across the entire area, the alignment of the furrows varying to reflect changes in the topography pattern of fields in the late 18th or 19th centuries by ditches that corresponded with field boundaries shown on 19th and early 20th century maps of the area. |
