Abstract:
A total of 371 linear metres of trenching was excavated on the site of former gardens associated with the Hall. Ditches and a pit, predominantly localised in the southern part of the site, may pertain to the periphery of the medieval village of Scraptoft, but produced only a few sherds of medieval and post-medieval pottery. From the 18th century the proposed development area had been heavily landscaped in conjunction with the construction of a hall and associated buildings, including now vanished woodland to the east, the formation of a still visible sunken parterre garden and two ponds. The trial trenching also indicated that there has been substantial infilling and raising of the ground level to the south and north of the Hall. The gardens and house were used into the mid 20th century, but the construction of a teacher training college in the 1960s radically altered the surrounding landscape, as areas of the southern part of the site were truncated by the construction of buildings, and this has affected the survival of both the medieval and the post-medieval landscape.
