Abstract: |
A third phase of watching brief revealed two walls underlying the existing chapel walls, and a ditch also below a previously observed limestone foundation. The walls relate to a pre-church stone building but it is unclear how much earlier: while a Saxon or earlier medieval predecessor to teh church is probably most likely, a Roman building cannot be ruled out. Four sherds of medieval pottery and two of Roman pottery were retrieved, along with a glazed ridge tile, probably early medieval, and more recent material. |
