Abstract: |
Prehistoric features were revealed in three out of 15 evaluation trenches on former pasture on a fen edge site between the rear of the High Street and the A47 bypass. The three trenches (5, 6 and 13) were extended and, in the former two, the features, a pit and a ring gully respectively, proved significant enough for open area excavations around them (features in Trench 13 were shallow with undiagnostic prehistoric pottery). Open area 5 contained a group of three Late Bronze Age pits, probably watering holes for animals, the largest of which produced loomweights as well as pottery. A complete Middle Iron Age roundhouse was revealed in Open area 6, similar to others found on fen edge sites in the area, along with associated pits and enclosure ditches. It had a typical southeast facing entrance with pottery concentrated in the gully terminals on either side and in nearby post holes and pits. |
