Abstract:
In November 2013 Archaeological Solutions Ltd (AS) carried out an archaeological evaluation at land between Nos. 24 and 26 Church Lane Close, Barton Mills, Suffolk (NGR TL 718 736; Figs.1 - 2). The evaluation was commissioned by Oxbury and Company on behalf of Flagship Housing Group Ltd and was undertaken in advance of the proposed construction of a residential development. The evaluation was required to comply with a planning condition which requires a programme of archaeological work, based on advice from Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service - Conservation Team (Forest Heath District Council Planning Reference F/2010/0760/FUL). The site is located on land between Nos. 24 and 26 Church Lane Close at the south end of the village. A modern pit was present in Trench 1. It contained modern glass and metal fragments, and a plastic toothbrush. Two irregularly shaped modern pits and a ditch were present in Trench 2. They also contained modern plastic, glass and metal fragments. The site had been subject to ground disturbance associated with the construction of the adjacent houses. A modern concrete-lined soakaway was present in the north-eastern corner of the area. A modern underground electric cable traversed the site in an approximately in NE/SW direction was located in Trench 1.
