Abstract: |
Resource assessment of 5 car park sites within the city of Peterborough The Desk Based Assessment revealed that the Car Haven car park has high archaeological potential due to its proximity to the cathedral and location within the former monastic precinct and Anglo Saxon burgh. The sites at The Wirrina, Bishops Road and The Regional Pool car parks all have medium potential due to their position on the possible line of the Anglo Saxon burgh boundary and medieval monastic boundary of Peterborough cathedral. The sites in Craig Street, Brook Street and Fair Meadow all have low archaeological potential due to significant post medieval and modern disturbance. The sites at Dickens Street and Wellington Street have been severely disturbed and truncated by 19th Century industrial activities, including a former Gas Works, which has left a relatively high level of ground contamination and any significant archaeology is unlikely to have survived. |
