Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was conducted for R G Carter Ltd during groundworks associated with the construction of a new medical centre and tower- The Greyfriars Lighthouse- on Howard Street South, Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. The earliest deposits encountered were likely to be 15th century in date and consisted of large amounts of probable estuarine clay, with smaller amounts of beach sand, domestic rubbish and wood and peat ash. This material was probably imported on to the site to raise the ground level and reclaim the land, which at that period would have been located on the river frontage and occupied by the Greyfriars when the site may have been part of the Franciscan friary. These deposits did not respect the post-medieval street plan of Rows (specifically the neighbouring Row 84), suggesting that the system of Rows in this part of the town post-dates the mid 16th-century dissolution of the monasteries and probably dates to urban regeneration later in the 16th century. A large number of walls were exposed during the monitoring which post-dates the 15th-century deposits, a large proportion of which were constructed of late medieval brick. However, some of this brick was recognised as re-used, which makes the sating of the masonary structures problematic. Two cellar structures were encountered, one of which was backfilled in the early 18th century. The final phase of archaeological activity identified was dated to the 1950s and 60s and consisted of the levelling of the area for redevelopment.
