Abstract:
in April 2010, OA East were commissioned by Lowden Construction to undertake a desk-based assessment of the barns at Battles Hall Farm, Manuden, Essex. The assessment has been undertaken as part of a pre-planning application to make alterations to barns at the rear of the Grade II listed building. Battles Hall barns are located to the immediate north of Battles Hall on the Furneux Pelham Road 1.5kilometres north west of the village of Manuden, Essex. The current Battles Hall is a Grade II listed manor house believed to date back to the early seventeenth century. The barns at the rear are no longer part of the hall estate. There is archaeological evidence of an earlier moated building on the site. Two arms of the moat are still in existence and although undated, likely to pre-date the current seventeenth century Battles Hall. The buildings are constructed of timber and brick,it appears from site inspection and cartographic evidence that they are, no earlier than nineteenth century in date. There may be a small amount of re-use of building material within the buildings themselves, however only further recording would confirm this. Although appearing no earlier than late nineteenth century in date, map evidence shows earlier existing outbuildings on the site on the same layout by the mid-late part of the century. Historical research carried out has found that a fire in the 1880s destroyed much of the farm and is likely the current buildings were erected on the footprint/foundations of these earlier barns.
