Abstract: |
Re-evaluation of plans of a Roman villa (first recorded in the 1850s), geophysical survey and the excavation of twelve trial trenches were undertaken to try to establish the position of the villa in the present landscape, its full extent, the presence or absence of side wings, and the condition of the remains. No evidence for side wings was recorded and it was shown that the villa had been heavily robbed for building stone in the past. Much stratigraphy had been removed during 20th century excavations but isolated patches were found to remain. Attempts to fix the original excavator's plan of the villa to the present landscape were unsuccessful. |
