Abstract:
Historic building survey was undertaken on the farmhouse at Church Farm, Shrawley (grid reference SO 80445, 64689) in advance of repairs and alterations to form guest accommodation and managers flat for an existing wedding venue. The southwest range dates from the C16th or early C17th. It is timber-framed with 2½ bays in 1½ storeys. A half bay at the east end forms a possible smoke bay with a later inserted brick chimney. The ground floor room in the eastern bay has quartered plain chamfered ceiling. A timber-framed wing was added to the northwest corner of the building probably in the C17th. It ceiling beams with ogee stops on the ground floor. A brick range was added to the east end of the building in the early C18 at right angles to the original C16/17 building. This is in English garden wall bond with dentiled eaves with a large external stack on the north end. It consists of 3 rooms on 2½ storeys. Ceiling beams in the ground and some of the first floor rooms have plain chamfers with ogee stops. C19th alterations include an extension at the rear to form a lobby-landing area and a lean-to lobby along the west side of the east range. The timber-framed wings were clad in brick.
