Abstract:
In August 2013 AS Ltd carried out rapid archaeological building recording of Westmill Bury Cottage, Westmill, Buntingford, Hertfordshire. The recording was carried out in order to comply with a planning condition attached to planning / listed building consent to convert the building to a single dwelling. The structure forms part of the ancillary out-buildings to Westmill Bury, an early 18th century house. Historic building recording revealed four general phases of work. The first phase comprises the north end of Range 1, which is distinguished, externally, by the presence of chequerboard brickwork. This was constructed with a roof hipped at both ends and lit by three dormers to attic accommodation. Both the brickwork and roof construction are characteristic of a late 17th or early 18th century date, suggesting contemporaneity with the main house. This original range was abutted by a contemporary timber-framed range (Range 2) to the west, both presumably providing carriage accommodation and stabling. A short time later, Range 1 was extended to the south to provide further stabling. A third phase saw Range 2 extended to the west with lateral ranges added to the north and south, of which only the north example now survives. Subsequent alteration was carried out in the 20th century when new windows and doors were added, the carriage house entrance blocked and chimney stacks inserted. No original fixtures such as loose-boxes or other fittings related to the early use of the building survive. Although much modified the ranges still represent an important element in the development of the historic complex.
