Abstract:
In August 2008, Archaeological Solutions Ltd (AS) carried out a programme of archaeological work at Parsonage Farm, Stanstead Mountfitchet, Essex (NGR TL 5153 2340) as part of a planning condition imposed on approval to convert the existing farm buildings to residential use. The programme comprised archaeological monitoring and recording during ground works and historic building recording of the barn and granary which are to be converted. Both extant agricultural buildings at Parsonage Farm are fine examples of their type and well preserved. The original barn structure dates to the 15th century and perhaps represents a remnant of a medieval farmstead. The adjoining granary was added in the 17th century and would be in an excellent state of preservation, had not a more recent change of use caused decay and damage to the ground floor timbers. Some repair and minor alteration to the barn is evident, but this was carried out with great restraint and economy, resulting in little disturbance to the overall balance of the structure. The quality of both buildings may be attributed to its link with the church, and possible Stansted Hall, though the documentary sources are disappointingly poor. The archaeological monitoring recorded little of particular interest, except a possible earlier floor surface of lime mortar beneath the cement flooring of the barn. Remnants of a modern brick built structure at the norther end of the barn survives, although its function is not evident, and this has likely truncated any earlier remains. It is possible that earlier floor surfaces survive at the southern end, however this was not investigated as works were limited to the construction of a new floor surface above the current floor level. The external monitoring revealed limited information in the areas of the new drainage trenches Substantial modern disturbance at surface level likely truncates any earlier remains.
